This 7-week introductory course on drones is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of drone technology, operations, regulations, and practical applications. Drones, or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), have become increasingly popular across various industries, including media, agriculture, mapping, and inspections.  This course will equip students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to operate drones safely and effectively for personal and professional purposes.

The first two classes will be held online. Online classes will meet Wednesday, July 15th and Wednesday, July 22nd, beginning at 5:30 pm serving as time for students to complete their TRUST certification, prepare for the Part 107 exam, and obtain insurance prior to live flight classes.

Live flight classes will begin Wednesday, July 29th. Students will be split into A&B groups prior to live classes. Live flight classes will be conducted near Church Creek Presbyterian, 2234 Plainview Road, Charleston, SC.

Group A meets on Wednesdays (5-7:30 pm) beginning July 29, 2026.

Group B meets on Saturdays (10-12:30pm) beginning August 1, 2026 .

During online classes, students will earn their TRUST certification, learn about the Part 107 exam, and explore topics such as drone applications, the industry's future, insurance considerations, and opportunities to start a drone business or work as a professional operator. Group assignments for in-person sessions will be determined during the first two weeks based on students' schedules.

Prior experience with drones is not necessary, although basic computer literacy and enthusiasm for learning new technologies are recommended.  By the end of the course, participants complete the TRUST certification, gain exposure to the Part 107 exam, participate in hands-on flight training, and explore pathways to starting drone business or pursue careers in drone-related industries while building content for a professional portfolio.

A Part 107 Study Guide is recommended for the course, ASA Remote Pilot Test Prep Book.

The instructor for the course is Ella Higgins.
