Do you feel a calling to help people when they are at their most vulnerable or caught in a state of emergency? You may want to pursue a career as an emergency medical technician (EMT). This EM training program consists of a minimum 200 hours of training and instruction over approximately five months. A real-world simulation is included to better prepare you to enter the workforce. The program requires a great deal of reading and practical skills demonstrations, including 50 hours of clinical ride-along training sessions, to become an EMT.

The curriculum includes preparatory (32 hours); airway (32 hours); CPR (8 hours); patient assessment (20 hours); medical (48 hours); trauma (40 hours); pediatrics (12 hours); operations (12 hours); and skill prep and review (16 hours).
Students are required to attend all classes including the
first day of class which is the mandatory orientation. Missing the first day of class is cause for dismissal from the program.

All coursework is approved by the Emergency Medical Services Division of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. South Carolina follows the current US Department of Transportation/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) curriculum for EMT Basic.
Certification: Successful completion of this program qualifies you to take the National Registry Examination for certification.
Registration Requirements:
- No online registration is available.
- Must be at least 18 years old before course completion.
- Must be a high school graduate or possess an equivalency (GED).
- Must be physically fit and able to perform all of the tasks required of an EMT.
- Show proof of completion of the required standardized Accuplacer test offered at the college’s Testing Center in the Student Center (Bldg. 410) on TTC’s Thornley Campus. If students have college credits or a degree the test is waived, simply send college transcript to robert.boone@tridenttech.edu The minimum scores that must be achieved are: 240 in each: Reading, Writing, and Math.
Ride-Along Requirements: Prior to the start of the 50 ride-along hours, students must provide vaccination records of the following:
- Completed TTC Heath Record (before internships begin - form available first day of class)
- Proof of major medical insurance (student plans are acceptable)
- This course provides a drug screen and national background report if students complete the scholarship application, link above.

This is a hybrid class!!! This class has an online/virtual component and also meets Face-to-Face on a rotating schedule - (face-to-face dates are below. Be sure to verify these dates. Rotation is Tuesday/Thursday beginning Tuesday October 22, 2024 at 9:00am - 4:00pm) in Building 940C at the Thornley Campus (Rivers Avenue).
