This live remote online course is an approved Continuing Education course designed to meet the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry educational requirements for dental assistants, and dental hygienists, to monitor the administration of nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation. This live online 4-hour course is approved for .4 CEUs, and designed to meet the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry ConEd requirements for dental assistants and dental hygienists, to monitor the nitrous oxide-oxygen sedation.

2)  Remote online Class: Saturday Sept 13th.  8:30am-12:30pm


Course Requirements:

1. Participants must be one of the following:
a. Dental Hygiene graduate from an ADA-accredited school.
b. Dental Assisting graduate from an ADA-accredited school.
c. On-the-job trained Dental Assistant who has been on the job for two consecutive years.
2. Participants must also have current CPR certification.
3. After completion of the course, participants must complete and submit the required application and documents to the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry in order to become eligible to take the board certification exam.

Learning objectives:

  • Learn the history of nitrous oxide.
  • Understand the physiological and psychological aspects of pain and anxiety and the concepts and management of pain and anxiety.
  • Discuss the physical and chemical properties of nitrous oxide and oxygen and the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of nitrous oxide.
  • Recognize the indications and contraindications of nitrous oxide sedation; side effects and adverse reactions. Learn the preparation and techniques used in administering nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation; types of equipment and safety features used during delivery of nitrous oxide/oxygen; monitoring and evaluating a patient to whom nitrous oxide/oxygen has been administered.
  • Master the legal considerations, proper documentation; and occupational exposure.

Once registered:

  • Students will receive an email with the login Instructions for the Orientation. Follow directions carefully, and do it early, in case you have difficulty. If any issues, follow the directions to the Helpdesk. Only the Helpdesk can help with login issues.
  • Students will create a login early so they can logon for the 30 min Orientation on 9/9/25 at 6:30pm.
  • Students will then logon Saturday 9/13/25 at 8:30am for the 4-hour live remote course
