As a phlebotomist, you provide specialized clinical support and collect blood and other body fluids from patients for laboratory testing. Lab test results provide valuable information, allowing physicians to diagnose and treat patients.
In this professional certificate program, students acquire theoretical and practical skills and knowledge through classroom, laboratory, and clinical practice.
This program is performance-based, and students must demonstrate mastery of the material.
Students learn anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, as well as how to establish a professional relationship with the patient. Students must demonstrate how to select, prepare, and perform live venipuncture, collect specimens, prepare, and maintain the equipment. Students will perform the skills needed within the safety and legal aspects of the occupation.
- This program meets on campus twice a week. Students must have access to a computer with a camera and a microphone for the required online testing. Smartphones do not work for this class.
- Strict attendance is required, and the first day of orientation is mandatory. Students must have a clear understanding of the course schedule. Missing the orientation will result in a student being removed from the course. Please refer to the schedule located at the bottom of this page.
Externship:
Students are required to complete a minimum of 104 hours (approximately 2.5 weeks) of off-campus clinical externship. Clinical schedules can vary Monday through Sunday, and times can vary; 8am-5pm, or 4am-1pm, depending on availability.
Students may be offered certain schedule shifts, depending on the availability of the clinical site. No
holidays are allowed for the externship. Students are required to have reliable transportation to travel to the assigned clinical externship site. Attendance for the clinical portion is strict.

- Must be 18 years of age or older and be a high school or GED graduate.

- After completing the application, students are required to email, in PDF format, proof of the following vaccinations & health insurance documents together to qualify. Please do not email them separately for security. Email items in #5 to: judy.martin@tridenttech.edu to qualify. Email acceptance will be sent when these are received.

- 2 Step PPD skin tests, 2 tests & 2 readings*
- Tetanus vaccine within 10 years
- Flu vaccine, current season
- MMR childhood vaccine proof
- Health Insurance proof, ID front only
- `* If known allergy to PPD derivative, the student will get the Quantiferon vaccine showing the result and date of reading with the signature of the professional with credentials.
- Students must attend an 'Info Session' with the program manager on Wed, 12/10 @3pm in 920/787.

- The SC Wins Scholarship funds the tuition, books, drug screening, and background screening.
- Textbooks: Phlebotomy Essentials Book, Workbook and Prep, by McCall latest edition, and the BLS/CPR book by AHA.

Please NOTE: Failure to complete a program funded by the SC Wins Scholarship eliminates any future Scholarships.
National Certification:
Students receive a TTC certificate of completion upon successfully completing the Phlebotomy program, including the class and clinical portions. Students must complete 72 hours of classroom training and a minimum of 104 hours of clinical training at a clinical site.
Successful completion of the program
enables students to sit for the national certification examination, at their own expense, offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP.org), the gold standard for phlebotomist certification and the credential that employers seek.
