Phlebotomy Training Program

Phlebotomists are specialized clinical support workers who collect blood from patients for laboratory testing. Results from laboratory testing provide valuable information to physicians for diagnosing and treating patients. Phlebotomists work in hospitals, commercial laboratories, private physician offices, public health departments, clinics, blood banks and as paramedical examiners for life insurance companies. This course provides the theoretical and practical knowledge of how to become a phlebotomist. The course covers, establishing a professional relationship with the patient, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, selecting and preparing the venipuncture site, collecting specimens, donor patients, preparing and maintaining equipment, and the health, safety and legal aspects of the occupation. "Live" sticks are performed.

Registration Requirements:
  1. Must be 18 years of age or older and provide a copy of a Driver's License or proof of identity.
  2. Provide a copy of a high school diploma or GED.
  3. Student should bring proof of background check to registration to registration for review.
    1. The student must submit a clear (within 90 days old) South Carolina SLED or National background check on the first day of class.  If student has a prior record, please e-mail Angie Duncan, program manager,, prior to registering.
  4. Complete Reading Comprehension using the standardized Accuplacer test offered through Trident Technical College's Testing Center in the Student Center (Bldg. 410). A score of at least 50 must be achieved and shown at the time of registration in bldg. 910. 
Required Textbooks and Materials (not included):
  • Uniform:
    • Scrubs (any color)
    • Shoes (White) flat; closed-toe and closed-ankle tennis shoe
    • Hair & Nails must present a professional image.
  • Textbooks:
    • .  Phlebotomy Essentials Book, Workbook and PrepU, by McCall Edition 7       ISBN: 1-4963-2521-4 (approximately $176)
Externship Information: Prior to entering externship students must submit:
  1. South Carolina SLED or National background check (already submitted on 1st day of class)
  2. 2-Step PPD (within 90 days of starting externship)
  3. Major medical insurance (liability)
  4. MMR vaccination (copy of immunization records) *if unable to locate immunization records, you will need to receive a Titer vaccination and supply records.
  5. Negative 9-Panel drug test (This should be completed last within 30 days of Externship)
*All students will complete 12 hours per week in the clinical externship portion for 10 weeks. Students will complete hours on a MWF or TTh rotation. Hours will be scheduled by the Program Manager. Students must have reliable transportation to travel to assigned externship site.
A certificate of achievement is awarded to individuals who successfully complete the Phlebotomy classroom and clinical portion. Students must complete 72 hours of classroom training in addition to 120 hours of clinical training at a clinical site (to be determined by the Program Manager and Externship Coordinator). Once the student has completed both portions successfully, they will be eligible to sit for a national certification examination.
